If the year was even as late as 2005, Michael Keaton would be an awesome choice to reprise his role as Batman ... but it's 2013 and he's too damn old.

I have no problem with Brolin ... but none of the choices 'wow' me.

BTW, as recently mentioned, I wouldn't have a problem with Ben Affleck as Batman ... but he won't do it.

'Man of Steel 2' Seeking 40-ish Batman: The Early Contenders

.

..

.

Josh Brolin, 46 --  Warner Bros likes him a lot. He starred in the studio’s Gangster Squad, and that’s after he toplined the studio’s 2010 dud Jonah Hex. He's also attached to star in Warners' Quasimodo project as well as Crazy for the Storm. Plus, he already has a Frank Miller connection: he leads the cast of Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, Robert Rodriguez’s upcoming take on the Miller crime comics.

(Two sources say Brolin is the frontrunner at this stage, but a studio source dismisses the chatter, saying that the casting process hasn't even begun.)  There's something unlikable about him. No wonder he didn't happen as the leading man. Solid character actor but not the lead.

Ryan Gosling, 32 -- Yes, Brolin's Gangster Squad co-star appears to be in the mix. He may be younger than the rest, he may be prettier than the rest, but no one questions his acting chops. Age is good but he's so smug and doesn't ooze class which is needed for a billioanire. And isn't he considered for Star Wars? Still, at least his career is going somewhere so he wouldn't end up just being known as "that guy from Btaman".

Other contenders:

Joe Manganiello, 36  -- According to several insiders, Snyder liked him as a possible Superman for Man of Steel before settling on Henry Cavill, but one major stumbling block was the schedule that Alan Ball had him on for filming True Blood, the HBO vampire series in which Manganiello plays a werewolf.  Right age for sure but I don't know, hard to see form a supporting role on TV if he could be the lead and he doesn't strike me as a find that would eventually go onto relevant roles such as Bale's DOR opus. Definteily a huge step down from Bale which all contenders  (save Gosling and Brolin to extent are)

Richard Armitage, 41 -- The British actor appeared in TV’s Strike Back, but may be best known to audiences for playing Thorin in the Hobbit movie for Warners' New Line division. He will reprise the characters for the second and third installments. Oh, God, he's already 42, not 41, is a genre whore (TH, CA, Spooks, Robin Hood TV series)  and is bland as fuck. Do you think it was a huge misunderstanding of his genius that he didn't happen all these decades despite Live Journal's and tumblr gushing? Also, you can count on one hand fingers how many critics noticed he was in TH. No way this guy would ever have career with Batman push.

Max Martini, 43 -- He cut his teeth playing tough guys on TV in shows such as Revenge, Castle and Hawaii Five-O but won notice as a sacrificing father in Pacific Rim and will play a Navy SEAL commander in this fall's Captain Phillips. LOL, this "Australian" dad from PR is a contender for Bruce Wayne? GET OUT!

Matthew Goode, 35 -- He’s already worked with Snyder in the director's 2009 film Watchmen, in which he played Ozymandias. Right age, bland as fuck. Younger Armitage. Means weak vanilla sauce.

Hey, Val Kilmer and Michael Keaton careers didn't get too hot thanks to Batman,eh? Pitty the poor sucker who gets the part. Clooney happened despite of Batman but at that time everyone knew he'd happen one way or the other.

OTOH, with the exception of Brolin and Gosling who happened to a degree, those other poor schmucks have no chance in hell, Batman or not. And considering it's Goyer's Batman, it's a lock to be inferior to anything Bale and Nolan.

Yep, it's poisaed to be inferior to Nolan AND Marvel on every level. Shame for Cavill who's great.

LOl @ fans wanting Urban and WB not even having him in consideration. Good job WB...not. He's desfintely bigger than Armitage who'd be Poor Man's Batman in inferior Batman just like he's Poor Man's Aragorn in inferior "LOTR". If he gets the part he'll cement the Poor Man's fate forever.

Armitage could actually make for a great choice. The only problem is... he's not a star name yet, and WB will surely want someone they can pitch to audiences and fans alike.

When you go back on Batman's movie incarnations, none of the actors were nobodies/run-of-the-mill actors even Clooney (who proved it afterwards). Every actors that brought Batman to life got that spark of charisma, wit and talent that stood above the rest.

Looking through those fans choice online, I only see run-of-the-mill actors with no intriguing spark whatsoever that are decent and serviceable but never "OMG, DAT performance!". The only contender would be Josh Brolin then because he's already a somebody in the movie industry.

He's a shit shoice for Batman but he could make a decent Gunslinger in The Dark Tower. That one should be older anyway and he looks the part. He just doesn't have charisma for the lead, though.

Agree with Dash. All run-of-the-mill "super-rushed" choices. This will suck.

No... it was just my way of saying that anyone playing or writing a new Batman is at an automatic disadvantage. Not just because of Nolan/Bale preceding them, but because of the online fanboy backlash they will (and already are) inevitably instigate.
