With an estimated $9.1 million domestic take on Friday, 42 has exceededour strong pre-release expectations to make history among baseball-themed movies at the box office.

The Friday figure topped the $6.7 million first-day take of Moneyball and blew past Trouble with the Curve's $4.17 million opening day. We're currently projecting a fantastic $28 million weekend debut for 42, topping The Benchwarmers ($19.7 million) and Moneyball ($19.5 million) as the best opening weekend ever for a baseball flick.

Even better news for Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures is the film's "A+" CinemaScore. Audiences are clearly enjoying the film, and with a fairly dry release schedule ahead for adult patrons, that's great news for 42's longevity. While not completely locked yet due to the upcoming May blockbusters, we're not ruling out a $100+ million domestic run.

What went right? 42 capitalized on a number of factors leading up to it's successful debut. First and foremost...

Smart marketing aimed at two underserved demographics (Christians and African-Americans) who were central aspects to the Jackie Robinson story.

Marketing was very good, finally from WB. They knew, what the target audience was and nailed it with relentlessness. WOM has been very helpful as well. I've yet to hear a negative thing and I'm going to see it on Sunday.

True.

Although, I have seen an alarming number of college students who have no idea who JR was.

More like what went WRONG, am I right? Take it away, Algren!

Both did poorly. Ford isn't a draw and nobody cares about that black baseball man. And some people were saying this was going to make $30m+ and finish with well over $100m.

And later last night:

42's number; Just another reason why America sucks.

Brilliant advertising, especially towards the always underestimated African American community. Positive reviews and a great job getting WOM out on Twitter. And the story is more iconic and inspirational, not to mention fun, than Moneyballs stats story. It had a ton going for it. I actually wanted it to bust past 30 mill.

Moneyball was a much better film, imo.

I agree that liberal white guilt is a huge factor in the film's success.

If you hate racism, then you must see this movie!

When everything is seemingly about race these days, it was perfect timing for 42.  Don't really see why this movie would appeal so much to Christians, though.

Jesus H Christ, can we stop with all these posts about "white guilt?!?" They're thinly veiled racism, not to mention uppity as all hell.
