After a lack of showing from most of last summer's blockbusters at the 2012 Super Bowl, 2013's big game is poised to showcase some serious heavyweights. Summer movies reported to be getting ad times this Sunday include Iron Man 3,Star Trek Into DarknessFast & Furious 6World War Z and The Lone Ranger

Compare that to last year's Super Bowl--viewed by a record 111.3 million people in North America--when most of the ad space for movies was claimed by pre-May releases. Aside from Marvel's The Avengers, Hollywood's summer slate was represented by Battleship and The Dictator. Not exactly the best choices. Still, 2013's lineup of shortened previews looks more interesting for summer movie fans.

But, does Hollywood really need to keep pushing its blockbusters for nearly $8 million per minute?

Last year I didn't care (but I like the Star Wars kid for an ad about a car) but this year I really care, just because of Iron Man 3

I don't see how any Superbowl Spot is worth 3.8 million dollars. I really don't. And for a film to spend say 15 million dollars on Superbowl adds, sorry, it just doesn't make any sense to me.

For films like Iron Man 3 and Fast 6 it is 100% worth it ^^

I think it is worth it if you haven't started your campaign yet (like Fast 6) or you have new kick ass footage to unveil

I don't see how. Are people really going to see it because of that commercial? The saturation point of tentpoles are already at their zenith without a SB commercial.

it's worth it as long as your spot looks amazing. If you're gonna show something lame like the John Carter trailer, then forget it. It can actually hurt your movie.

A SB spot can create an awareness and anticipation for a movie, I think it's important.

How would you know that your film is lame though before you air the commercial? When a studio spends 200 million dollars on a film and has invested sometimes more than 2 years in it, chances are they hope it doesn't suck.

i meant the spot they aired was lame, not the movie.  the trailer was baaad, not spectacular at all.

Believe it or not the SB is as much an advertising event as well as sports event. A lot of times the ads are better than the games IMO and I think a lot of people see it the same way.

However, I believe in diminishing returns as well so it depends a lot on the movie. For something like IM3 in which awareness is already high it may not fill that much more seats during OW. It'll pump up the fanbase fore sure.

For high risk films like PR and LR. I definitely think so. I think PR looks fantastic and I like the trailer, but am unsure how this will do in the BO right now. And for such an expensive and important tent pole movie, I'm surprised that they don't have any spots. Of course though the ad has to be good.

If it's a good trailer a superbowl spot can do wonders for opening weekend.

I remember the first Iron Man trailer blowing people away during that years superbowl.

That's its SB spot that put Avengers on my radar. I didn't have any interest of seeing it prior to that, hell I've forgotten about it and the fact it was due to April 2012 in my country. Yeah seeing that Iron Man shot flying toward the portal while Chitauris attacked and Hulk rampaging everything on its way, I thought surprinsingly"Oh, maybe it will not suck then, that looks quite exciting" . That spot got me interested a lot more that I was initially led to believe and I think I was not the only one that thought so watching the Superbowl.

John Carter's was a total excitement killer for me. Why were they trying to sell it all moody and dull like Superman Returns?

I remember thinking Act of valor had the best spot last year. I think the SB ad helped the movie

Not for the money they charge, no. Not when you can put something on youtube for free.

So you have 100 million people in the US and about 10 million in Canada that watch the Superbowl. You pay 3.8 million in the US and about 400K for an add in Canada. You hope people see your add. Great, you just spent about 15 million dollars for your superbowl spot.

Iron Man 3 has 51 million views on You-Tube, and that's free. The Dark Knight Rises didn't need the Superbowl to make a billion dollars and The Hobbit didn't need a superbowl trailer to make a billion dollars. There is no correlation between a Superbowl commercial and big box office or a big opening weekend.

DKR already had a ton of awareness. It really didn't need an SB ad. Neither does IM3. Maybe it'll get more people to watch but much more during OW? Not so sure. A good SB ad would help LR.

Interesting debate. I do think a well done ad can help especially last year with TA but I'm not sure if the 4M for 30 seconds is worth it.

so advertising on tv is useless?

how many of those 51 million  have first seen the trailer on tv and then rushed to youtube to watch it again and again when they please...? is the trailer playing on tv?

A movie like Kick Ass 2 would need a SB ad, given it's not as famous as Iron Man.
