When and Where You Can Get Weekly Numbers:

As explained, there are only three regular box office report outlets currently in China: Entgroup, a Chinese entertainment media site, has an English page and it report weekly top 10 on Tuesday since 2011. Entgroup now is cooperating with the National Film Development Funds Management Committee (NFDFMC) on weekly box office reports

Mtime, biggest movie site in China, have been reporting weekly top 10 numbers since 2008. And currently they claim their source (since early 2011) comes from China Film Newspaper, an official film newspaper belongs to CHINA FILM ART RESEARCH CENTER, which is part of SARFT/ Film Bureau. China Film Newspaper now also release weekly numbers on Weibo.com, the most popular Chinese social site, every Tuesday.

Or simply here in this thread every Tuesday.

China Theatrical Status Updates:

As of April 2013, there are about a total of 3,600 theaters from 45 commercial cinema chains in China, about 3000 of which report box office daily.

Total screen number as of April crossed 15,000, of which more than 12,000 is 2K digital, 10,000 is 3D and 110 is IMAX.

As of now, there are about 70000 or plus screenings per day national wide with the widest releases each getting 20000 or more.

Wow that much? Are the comics popular there? I didn't think it had much appeal outside of Europe.

Opening on 15th, a Tuesday. Should do 12M~15M 5 days.

6 days, right? :)

So that would mean a final total in 30-40m range. I hope it is closer to 40m.

When my family lived in India I had quite few Tintin comics. A lot of my friends did as well.

Tintin was very popular in the 80s in China. And many people are waiting to see it.

No. Actually far from it.

The Smurfs was A LOT more popular than Tintin, and it opened less than 14m and earned a total of 40m. Tintin will do less.

All the articles I have read from Chinese press, it seemed pretty popular (whether at the levels of Smurfs, I don't know).

Also, China seems to like action-adventure. So it could have done fairly decently in China even with no earlier awareness.

Any word on Chinese opening?

UIP dailies (which include China I believe) jumped from $400K on the 14th to $1.5M and $1.3M on the 15th and the 16th. An educated guess would be that Tintin scored about $1M in China on these 2 days.
