On Tuesday evening, Paramount unleashed the first trailer for Michael Bay's Transformers: Age of Extinction. Online fans have been awaiting a full preview of the sequel, particularly since the initial glimpse of the movie during last month's Super Bowl. The trailer made the sequel responsible for a healthy 27,149 mentions on Twitter within its first day.

Compared to recent trailer debuts, that figure leaves a bit to be desired. Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxytrailer spawned 47,419 tweets in its first half-day on February 18, followed by another 50,239 the next day. Warner Bros.' newest Godzilla trailer generated a whopping 60,102 tweets on February 25.

While no entirely direct correlation can be made between these numbers, the fact that Age of Extinction's trailer isn't eliciting as much excitement as the other two speaks to the fact that some franchise fatigue has set in. This is expected for a series that both fans and general audiences feel to have peaked with the first movie seven years ago. It does, however, underline the growing reality that this coming summer's domestic box office crown is up for grabs by a handful of contenders (a topic we'll be covering more closely as May approaches).

2011's Transformers: Dark of the Moon saw North American grosses dip to $352 million (still an impressive figure) after the first sequel, Revenge of the Fallen, earned $402 million two years prior. Factoring in Moon's addition of 3D prices, the third film lost about one-quarter of its predecessor's audience... (more)

There is a strong need for bigger explosions. If they do a 2nd trailer as epic as the 2nd trailer of TF3, interesting will go sky high.

Next 4 Weeks Predictions (Updates on Mondays and Thursdays):

- The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 - 155/385

- Horrible Bosses 2 - 28/43/102 | Penguins of Madagascar - 25/42/104

- The Pyramid - 5/11

- Exodus: Gods and Kings - 43/145 | Top Five - 4/9

Yep. Once Paramount releases a trailer with more of the Transformers and explosions, they are all set

Which Summer movies first trailers were good/great?

You need to check into rehab if you think TA2 isn't going to make a dent in AVATAR 2's box office

Unless Cameron offers SMELL-O-VISION with AVATAR 2, It's not doing more than 400M Plus ..  And YES, I'll bet AVATAR 2 doesn't do more than at best 425M Domestic

Cap 2 had a decent trailer, Spidey 2 had a pretty amazing trailer despite the obvious spoilers, even Godz had a great teaser. On the other hand, X-Men: DOFP had a disappointing "teaser", Guardians had an alright trailer, and this as I said had an ok trailer.

I really disliked TF4 trailer. It was so unspectacular that made me cringe. Same deja vu sensations as PotC4, with any particular catchy image/scenes.

I think the marketing dept felt that the dinobots footage would stir hype.  Not sure if the dinobots are that big of a deal.  Mark Wahlberg may be more of a positive factor than anything else.

Opening on Friday will help TF4 make 125+ m OW.

With an OW that size I don't see how it misses 300 m.

and WW it will still cross 1 billion easily.

TF will continue to be a major cash cow for Paramount well into the future.

Cap 2 (although not really summer) and TASM 2 first trailer were great IMO. GOTG and Godzilla were good too. I found this trailer of TF4 good too.

125m OW would require a way bigger OD than DOTM OD.

125m would require a 46m OD, with declining popularity, less favorable 3D rates amd the weakest trailer of the franchise. I don't see how 46 OD is even a possibility

Let's keep in mind that Transformers is pretty much the opposite of an internet-driven franchise. It is hated by people on the internet but loved by the GA.

Those tweeters are usually part of the GA who goes to see these movies.

We shouldn't be surprised that the fourth TF movie will gross less than the third anyway.

Yes, and I never said it wouldn't.

I'm also taking overseas gross into account, much like POTC: OST.
