The holiday box office season is upon us, and with it comes yet another science fiction flick in Ender's Game. The genre has walked a somewhat rocky road this year with OblivionStar Trek Into DarknessPacific Rim, and Elysium all performing under expectations and/or just well enough to be considered modest successes.Gravity is bucking that trend as we speak, but as many will be quick to point out, it's hardly comparable to those other films.

Aside from being the next in line of a glut of sci-fi pics and having the unfortunate fate of being the first to open just weeks after GravityEnder's Game will also have to contend with Marvel's Thor: The Dark World in its second weekend (followed by Catching Fire in its fourth). Translation: genre fans may end up turningEnder into a one-weekend movie unless word of mouth miraculously trumps that of its competition. The holiday season could pad any potentially short legs, but Lionsgate/Summit isn't in an enviable position with the flick... (more)

looking forward to this movie but it is barely getting any attention. Hope it at least can get to 80m

This will flop, unfortunately. The trailers are dull.

I still don't get why Summit chose this date when it is so obvious that it will flop with that date.

Ender has a relevant fanbase so more twitter/facebook activity than films like John Carter and Oblivion is expected. The fact that it's well behind similarly fan-driven fare like Pacific Rim and Tron Legacy should be a cause for concern (or, if you wish for the film to tank due to Orson Scott Card, a cause for reassurance).

Anyhow, if one film flops this November, it'll be this.

Much as I want a record November, I can't say I'd be too unhappy if this bombs.

The issue with this film is that it looks too kiddy for adults/teens and looks too mature for kids and their parents.

The problem is the release date. At most, the average American will see 1 film in any given month, and this November already has two major tentpoles.

Yes, biggest problem is the release date. Even if it looked like a good movie, it has no room whatsoever.

This has "massive bomb" written all over it. I don't think it would do well no matter when it was released but coming right before the Thor and Hunger Games sequels, it's just complete bait.

Perhaps they had Ender's Game here because maybe they thought they weren't going to have CF in November due to all the crazy director changes and JLaw's commitment to Fox. When they did have it all set to go for November, perhaps they just gave up on Ender's Game. Only reason I have on why they chose November.

Well, yeah of course that's a problem. :P But I feel like even if it was released at a time with no other films, the marketing has been very unappealing regardless.

Summit only has domestic distribution as the foreign rights were sold to various OS distributors so they won't see any of the OS grosses.

This will flop HARD.

As much as people loved the books, the trailers just make it look uninteresting to go see in theaters.

They'll have to reboot this again in a few years, assuming the books are still popular.  And yes, I'm already talking about rebooting this.

Wow, that's a really dumb thing to do.

OS was their only hope at making a profit off this.
